Hallow Cathode Lamps

Hollow cathode lamps are metal-vapor discharge lamps developed for atomic absorption analysis. This analysis requires a specific lamp for each element to be measured.

An Hollow cathode lamp usually consists of a glass tube containing a cathode, an anode, and a buffer gas (usually a noble gas). A large voltage across the anode and cathode will cause the buffer gas to ionize, creating a plasma.

Hollow Cathode Lamp Operation-

Two parameters which affect the analytical results are-

• The hollow cathode lamp current , which affects the intensity of the source.
• The Spectral band width of the instrument which affects the isolation of the spectral line.
